If you love aviation and travel, Surdex has a great opportunity to fly as an Aerial Photographer across North America.

Surdex is one of the largest and most respected Aerial Survey and Mapping companies in North America.  Many aspiring pilots, photographers, and geography majors have jump started their careers in this position.

Our Aerial Photographers fly along with a Commercial Pilot on single, twin engine, and turbo-prop aircraft that are equipped with high-end digital cameras and Lidar sensors used to capture imagery and data for maps. 

This position has significant travel with 15 days on duty and 6 days off.  Since imagery can only be taken on good weather days, there are opportunities to go sightseeing while getting a minimum of 8 hours of pay.  Surdex reimburses expenses when you travel, including commercial airline flights, hotels and meals. 

As an Aerial Photographer, you will:

  • Assemble, load, maintain and operate all camera equipment and sensor systems
  • Monitor and adjust the equipment's operation and make minor repairs while in flight
  • Record data accurately while on each flight line on the grid
  • Assist the pilot with decisions to re-fly lines if there are problems with the data
  • Upload data to the company website after each mission is flown

 Education, Experience and Abilities:

Required

  • Associate or technical degree
  • Training or interest in photography, aviation or mapping
  • Experience using Windows for file management and Microsoft office is required
  • Ability to learn several types of technical equipment
  • Team player who can work with various personalities
  • Proficient in verbal and written English
  • Very detailed, punctual, flexible and organized
  • Must have a personal credit card for up to $3,000 of expenses - weekly reimbursements

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in a geospatial program, or Private Pilot's certificate or experience working in an aviation-related role
  • Knowledge or education to work in the office processing imagery or data - strongly preferred

Essential Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds of equipment and supplies
  • Ability to walk, climb, stretch and sit in a confined space for up to six (6) hours at a time
  • Visual acuity to see close-up, distance, color, periphery and depth
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate small equipment parts
  • Ability to adapt to changing temperatures, noise, light and altitude
  • Ability to pass DOT pre-employment, random and post-accident drug tests 
  • Must pass criminal background check and have a clean driving record
  • US Passport or ability to obtain one
  • MUST live in the St. Louis Metro area local candidates only will be considered
  • Must be able to work a schedule of 15 days on duty with 6 days off
